titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to tables
abstract 758,113. Tables &c., non-folding frames. STAPLES & CO., Ltd., and HEAL, R. G. Dec. 22, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1954], No. 1869/54. Classes 52(2) and 52(3). A cantilever type table consists of a top 10 supported by U-shaped tubular elements 11, 13 engaging each other telescopically to allow of vertical adjustment, the top being secured to element 13 by cleats 9 and the elements being held in the adjusted position by a latch mechanism comprising a lever 19 pivoted to a mounting 20 on the limb 14 of the smaller element and having at its lower end a latch 21 engageable with any one of a number of holes 22 in the outer limb 12, a button 26 arranged in a hole in the smaller element allowing lever 19 to be moved against the action of a wire spring having its end 31 secured to the lever. In modifications the latch mechanism is replaced by a screw clamp, a pin and hole fastening or a conical wedge 48, Fig. 8. In another modification, Fig. 9, the upper end of each limb 12 has slots 50 and an externally tapering portion 51 is engaged by the tapering threaded bore of a nut 52 so that tightening the nut contracts limb 12 onto limb 14. Alternatively, Fig. 10, a rubber grommet 54 clamped against a plate 61 by a screw 62 bears against the inner face of a limb 12 ; or, Fig. 11, a spring latch arranged externally has a nose 57 engageable in holes 58 formed in limb 14.
