titleOfInvention A process for plasticising or masticating natural or synthetic rubber
abstract A plasticizer for natural or synthetic rubber comprises an organic "electroneutral" salt obtained by reaction of equimolecular amounts of cationic surface-active and anionic surface-active compounds, or includes a mixture of equimolecular amounts of said cationic surface-active and anionic surface-active compounds. The cationic surface-active compounds are preferably ammonium, sulphonium, or phosphonium compounds possessing at least one aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic, aliphatic-aromatic, or cyclo aliphatic-aromatic radical with at least 6 and preferably not more than 20 carbon atoms, e.g. trimethyl-octyl ammonium chloride, trimethyl-dodecyl ammonium chloride, trimethyl-octadecyl ammonium metho sulphate, dimethyl-dioctadecyl ammonium chloride, dimethyl-dodecyl-benzyl ammonium chloride, dimethyl-cyclocyl-alkyl ammonium chlorides with alkyl radicals C10-C22 and/or corresponding mixtures thereof, dodecyl pyridinium chloride, and hexadecyl-pyridinium bisulphate. The radicals can also contain oxygen, sulphur, or nitrogen. The anionic surface-active compounds are preferably aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aliphatic-aromatic or cycloaliphatic aromatic containing at leatst 6 and preferably not more than 20 carbon atoms and at least one salt forming group, e.g. alkyl sulphates or sulphonates, alkyl-benzyl sulphonates, salts of sulphonated oils and fats, of dialkyl and/or dialkyl-aryl disulphonimides or N-acyl sulphonamides, of fatty acids and of the condensation products of high molecular weight carboxylic acids or sulphonic acid halides with proteins. Among the examples of such anion-active compounds quoted are the water soluble salts of wax acids, naphthenic acids, resin acids, octyl-hydroxy acetic acid, hexadecyl-mercapto acetic acid C-alkyl cresoxy acetic acids, dodecyl or oleyl sulphuric acid ester, the sulphuric acid esters of ethylene glycol mono-octyl ether, the mono or di-sulphuric acid ester of glycol-mono-stearic acid ester, the phosphoric acid ester of decanediol-mono-acetate, the o -butyl-ether or decyl sulphuric acid ester, the o -hexyl thio ether of octyl thio suphuric acid ester and the mixture of isomeric 2-isoalkyl-cresoxy-benzoic acid-sulphonic acids 5, with alkyl radicals of from 5 to 11 atoms. The amounts of plasticizer employed is 0.5 to 30 per cent of the weight of the natural or synthetic rubber. In an example 20 parts by weight of the "electroneutral" salt obtained from equimolecular amounts of dimethyl-cyclohexyl-dodecyl ammonium chloride and dedeyl sodium sulphate and 10 parts dioctyl phthalate are compounded with 130 parts smoked sheets.
