titleOfInvention A process for the manufacture of hydroxyalkanesulphonic acids or salts thereof
abstract Hydroxyalkanesulphonic acids or salts thereof are obtained by reacting an olefinic aliphatic alcohol having more than three carbon atoms per molecule with a neutral or weakly alkaline aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of sulphurous acid in the presence of finely distributed oxygen or an oxygen containing gas. As starting materials there may be used crotonyl alcohol, pentene-3,4-ol-2 allyl carbinol, dimethylallyl carbinol, diethylallyl carbinol, methylpropylallyl carbinol, pentene-4,5-ol-2, and pentene-4,5-ol-1. Oxygen may be supplied as air, oxygen gas or agents which evolve oxygen, e.g. hydrogen peroxide. An excess of sulphite, e.g. 20-60 per cent above the theoretical quantity required, is desirable. Examples describe the preparation of 3-hydroxy-butane-1-sulphonic acid and of 4-hydroxy-butane-1-sulphonic acid.
