titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to optical brightening agents
abstract The invention comprises 4 : 6-dimethyl-7-methylamino-coumarin and the process of making it by refluxing an alcoholic solution of N-methyl-m-aminocresol and ethyl acetoacetate with zinc chloride and hydrolysing the resultant zinc chloride addition product of the desired coumarin. An example is given of the process.ALSO:Fibrous materials are brightened by treating them at any stage of their manufacture with 4:6 - dimethyl - 7 - methylamino - coumarin in an aqueous liquor. Wool, silk, nylon and cellulose acetate may be so treated in acid, neutral or alkaline baths, to which may be added washing agents such as soaps, alkaryl sulphonates, salts of sulphated higher alcohols, polyglycol ethers, polyphosphates, silicates, borates and sodium sulphate. In the examples (1) bleached wool is treated with the coumarin and optionally formic acid also; (2) wool is dyed with Alizarine Brilliant Blue B and the coumarin added towards the end of the dyeing; (3) nylon is treated with the coumarin; (4) cellulose acetate is treated with the coumarin; (5) textile materials of animal or polyamide fibres are washed with soap composition containing the coumarin and the auxiliary agents specified above Specification 655,296 is referred to.ALSO:Washing compositions for textile materials contain soap or other detergent together with 4 : 6 - dimethyl - 7 - methylamino - coumarin. There may also be present builders such as sodium polyphosphate, silicates, borates and sodium sulphate. Specified detergents are sodium salts of mixed higher fatty acids, alkaryl sulphonates, salts of sulphated higher alcohols and polyglycol ethers. In examples (1) the coumarin is added to a dry preparation of soap and builders as above, (2) a slurry of soap or other detergent containing builders is mixed with the coumarin (dry or in alcoholic solution) and spray-dried to a powder. Specification 655,296 is referred to.
