titleOfInvention Production of haloacids
abstract The invention comprises a process for making an omega-haloaliphatic carboxylic acid by reaction between a cyclic ketone having a keto group in the ring with an aqueous mixture of hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid to obtain a lactone-containing product and treating the crude product with a hydrohalic acid. In examples, the residue from a previous reaction between cyclohexanone, hydrogen peroxide and concentrated sulphuric acid is caused to react with fresh hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid and further cyclohexanone is added, the product without isolation being treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The product is epsilon-chlorocaproic acid. Other cyclic ketones specified include cyclopentanone, suberone, methone and others having 5-, 6- or 7-membered rings. The brominated product may be obtained with the use of hydrobromic acid at the corresponding stage. Temperatures are preferably 30-45 DEG C. for the first reaction and up to 170 DEG C. for the hydrochloric acid reaction.
