titleOfInvention Production of halogenated isocyanates
abstract The invention comprises polyisocyanates of aromatic compounds having also one or more haloalkyl or haloalkoxy groups and a process for obtaining halogenated isocyanates by halogenating alkyl or alkoxy aromatic di-isocyanates in the side-chain, with the aid of heat, actinic light or free-radical producing agents; also polyisocyanates containing a halogenated alkylene group linking two aromatic nuclei. In examples, m-toluene isocyanate, p-toluene isocyanate, 2 : 4-toluylene di-isocyanates, 2 : 6-toluylene di-isocyanate, 4 : 41-diphenylmethane-di-isocyanate, 1 - ethyl - 2 - phenyl - isocyanate, and 3 : 31 - bis - methoxy - 4 : 41 - diphenyl - diisocyanate, are chlorinated or brominated in actinic light and solvents and with free-radical producing agents to give the corresponding monohalomethyl derivatives, including 4 : 41-diphenyl - chloromethane - di - isocyanate, a - chloroethyl - phenyl - isocyanate, 1 - bromomethyl phenyl di-isocyanate and 3 : 31-bischloromethoxy - 4:41 - diphenyl - di - isocyanate; also the 1-trichloromethylphenyl 2:4-diisocyanate. The 1-chloromethyl - phenyl - diisocyanate-2:4 gives by reaction with methanol, a urethane which reacts with pyridine to give a water-soluble quaternary salt. A polyurethane is obtained by reaction between 1:4-butanediol and the halomethylphenyl-2:6-di-isocyanates, and quaternary products are generally obtainable from the urethanes.
