titleOfInvention | A process for the manufacture of organosilanes |
abstract | Methylchlorosilanes are prepared by heating with hydrogen chloride, at a temperature of 200 DEG to 900 DEG C., the residue boiling above dimethyldichlorosilane, which residue is formed during the reaction of methyl chloride with silicon, the amount of HCl present being at least 4 per cent by weight of the residue. Pressures may be normal or above atmospheric. The process may be batchwise, or continuous, in which the reactants are passed through a hot tube which may contain inert or catalytic packing, e.g. quartz, or activated alumina or silica-alumina. The residue used is a complex mixture of a large number of chlorine-containing silanes, disilanes, disiloxanes, silmethylene and silethylene compounds and other polymeric compounds. In the reaction, the SiSi, SiCSi, SiOSi and the higher alkyl groups are cracked to give methylchlorosilanes having only one Si atom in the molecule. Specifications 375,667, [Group XVII, 375,668, [Group XXVII], 375,669, [Group XL], 375,673, 375,674, [Group XXIII], and 685,656 are referred to.ALSO:Silicon tetrachloride is produced as a byproduct in the preparation of methylchlorosilanes in which the residue from the reaction between methyl chloride and silicon, which boils above dimethyldichlorosilane, is heated with hydrochloric acid at a temperature of 200 DEG C. to 900 DEG C., the amount of HCl being at least 4 per cent by weight of the residue. Pressures may be normal or above atmospheric. The process may be batchwise, or continuous, in which the reactants are passed through a hot tube which may contain inert or catalytic packing, e.g. quartz or activated alumina or silica-alumina. The residue used is a complex mixture of chlorine-containing silanes, disilanes, disiloxanes, silmethylene and silethylene compounds and other polymeric compounds. In the examples, the percentage of silicon tetrachloride in the reaction products ranges from 4.2 to 13.5. Specifications 375,667 [Group XVII], 375,668 [Group XXVII], 375,669 [Group XL], 375,673, 375,674 [both in Group XXIII] and 685,656 are referred to. |
