titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of lubricating greases |
abstract | Lubricating grease is prepared by substantially completely dehydrating a mixture of a lubricating oil and one or more alkaline earth metal soaps of a hydroxy fatty acid by heating to below the solution temperature of the soap in the oil, and cooling the mixture to 210 DEG F. or below, the mixture being subjected to shearing at a rate of at least 25,000 reciprocal seconds during both the heating and cooling steps. Performed soaps may be used, or the soap may be prepared in the lubricating oil by saponification of the corresponding acids or glycerides. Acids referred to are hydroxy and dihydroxy stearic acids, hydroxy and dihydroxy palmitic acids, hydroxy myristic acids and hydroxy behenic acids, and the hydroxy acids produced by catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbon oils and waxes. The soap of the hydroxy fatty acid may also contain other soaps such as sodium soaps, e.g. sodium stearate and oleate and sodium 12- hydroxy stearate. Normal or basic soaps may be used. Lubricating oils referred to are mineral and synthetic oils such as oils prepared, for example, by redistilling a gas oil or lubricating oil fraction over caustic soda, extracting the distillate with a solvent such as sulphur dioxide, and refining the raffinate with an absorbent. Esters of alimono- and dibasic acids, aliphatic esters, organic phosphates, phosphonates, organic silicates and silicones; examples specified are bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, dibutyl phthalate, tetrakis (2-ethylhexyl) silicate, dioctyl phthalate, tributyl phosphate, trimethylene glycol polymers and copolymers of ethylene and propylene glycols. The shearing may be effected by passing the grease through a colloid mill, a multiple roll mill such as a paint mill, or a homogenizing valve, or by forcing the grease through a screen by a high capacity pump. Oxidation inhibitors such as aromatic amines, e.g. N, N1-(tetramethyldiamino-diphenylmethane, diphenylamine and phenyl alpha-naphthylamine; anticorrosion agents; and non-soap thickeners such as latex and "Paratac" (Registered Trade Mark) may be incorporated in the greases. |
