titleOfInvention | Process for the manufacture of symmetrical tetrachlorethane from symmetrical dichlorethylene |
abstract | A process for preparing 1:1:2:2-tetrachlorethane comprises chlorinating liquid 1:2-dichlorethylene in the presence of ultra-violet light at a temperature between 20 DEG and 120 DEG C. The temperature is preferably 45 DEG to 60 DEG C. The chlorine is preferably finely dispersed as small bubbles. The dichlorethylene and chlorine may be passed in the same direction or preferably, in counter-current to each other, through a column-like reaction vessel of annular cross-section, in which is mounted an ultraviolet light source, such as a mercury vapour lamp, the chlorine entering at the bottom through a glass sinter. |
