abstract | The invention comprises a compound having the formula: <FORM:0749200/IV(a)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from one to eight carbon atoms, inclusive, and the preparation of the 21-acyloxy compound by oxidation of an 11-hydroxy-21-lower acyloxy-4,17(20)-pregnadiene-3-one by means of an oxidizing agent capable of converting an 11b -hydroxy group to an 11-keto group, e.g. N-bromoacetamide, N-bromosuccinimide or N-chlorosuccinimide in pyridine or chromic acid in acetic acid, and of the corresponding 21-hydroxy compound by hydrolysis or saponification of a 21-acyloxy-4,17(20)-pregnadiene-3,11-dione. Examples describe the production of 21-acetoxy and 21-hydroxy-4,17(20)-pregnadiene-3,11-dione. Specifications 733,448, 749,195, 749,198, 749,199 and 749,201 are referred to. |
