titleOfInvention Steroids
abstract The invention comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:0749195/IV(a)/1> wherein R and R1 are the same or different and each represent hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing from one to eight carbon atoms, inclusive, and n is 0 or 1, the preparation thereof by bringing into contact a compound of the formula <FORM:0749195/IV(a)/2> wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical, with an organic ketal forming agent being an alkane-a -diol or alkane-b -diol in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce a 3-cyclic ketalized 3,11-diketo - 4,17(20) - pregnadiene - 21 - carbonyloxy steroid and then reacting the thus produced 3-cyclic ketalized steroid with lithium aluminium hydride in the presence of an organic solvent followed by the hydrolysis of any organo-lithium complexes and excess lithium aluminium hydride present, to produce a 3-cyclic ketalized 11,21-dihydroxy-4,17(20) pregnadiene-3-one, and the conversion thereof to 11,21-dihydroxy - 4,17(20) - pregnadiene - 3 - one by acid hydrolysis. As acid catalysts there may be used hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, p-toluene-sulphonic acid benzene sulphonic acid and sulphoacetic acid. As alkane-diols there may be used ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, propane - 1,2- diol, butane - 1,2 - diol, 3 - methylbutane - 1,2 - diol, octane - 1,2 - diol, butane-2,3 - diol, pentane - 2,3 - diol, 5,5 - dimethyl-octane - 2,3 - diol, butane - 1,3 - diol, pentane-2,4 - diol, 4 - methylpentane - 1,3 - diol or octane-1,3-diol. The hydrolysis of the ketalized steroid to the free ketone may be effected by means of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Examples describe the production of 11b ,21-dihydroxy - 4,17(20) - pregnadiene - 3 - one. Specifications 749,198, 749,199 and 749,201 are referred to.
