abstract | High molecular weight formaldehyde polymers are stabilized by incorporating therein in an amount of not more than 10 per cent by weight a compound selected from: (a) hydrazines, substituted hydrazines or hydrazides; (b) monomeric aromatic secondary or tertiary amines; (c) phenols or substituted phenols; or (d) ureas, thioureas or their substitution products. The compounds may be dry mixed with the polymer, melt mixed, mixed in a solvent or diluent, e.g. diethyl ether, acetone, which is removed, or incorporated in the polymer during its preparation, e.g. utilizing the methods of Specifications 742,097, 742,135, 744,336 and 748,836. Compounds (a) are hydrazine, tetraphenylhydrazine, tetraanisylhydrazine, adipic dihydrazine, benzoyl hydrazine, 1,1 - diphenyl - 2 - methacryloylhydrazine, hydrazine hydrate, alpha-benzyl-alpha-phenylhydrazine, acetylphenylhydrazine, dimethylhydrazine, benzylhydrazine, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine, propionoylhydrazide, tolylhydrazine, stearoylhydrazide, dodecylhydrazine, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-dodecyl-2-acetylhydrazine; (b) are phenyl-alpha-naphthyl-, phenyl-beta-naphthyl-, di-beta-naphthylphenylenedi-, triphenyl-, diphenyl-, N-phenyl-alpha-naphthyl-, N-phenylbenzyl-, N-cyclohexyl-beta-naphthyl-, di-para-tolyl-para, para1-phenylenedi-, dimorphilinophenylenedi-, di-phenylxylylenedi-, dicumenylphenylenedi-, ditolyldiurylenediamine, N-methyl and N-butylaniline, N - dodecyl - m - toluidine, N,N1 - diphenylbenzidine, N - phenyl - N - methylaniline, N-dioctylaniline, di - N - morphilinobenzenes and phenthiazine; (c) are phenol, phenols, cresols, xylenols, methylene-bis-(2-hydroxy-3-tert-butyl-5-methylbenzene), alpha- and beta-naphthols, p - hydroxyphenylmorpholine, 1 - isobutyl - 2-aminophenol, 4 - bis - (beta - hydroxyethyl)-aminophenol, para, para1-dihydroxydiphenylamine, resorcinol, pyrogallol, and para, para1-dihydroxydiphenylmethane; (d) are urea, N,N1-bis - (methoxylmethyl) -, n - butyl - N,N1-diethyl-, dicyclohexyl-, ethanol-, N-cyanomethyl-, benzoyl-, bis-(acetylthiomethyl)-, thio-, phenyl thio-, ethylene thio-, s-diphenyl thio-, di-o-tolyl thio-, p-chlorophenyl thio-, p-methoxy phenyl thio-, o-tolyl thio-, p-methoxy-phenyl thio-, p-chlorophenyl thio-, p-methoxy phenyl thio-, o-tolyl thio-, N,N1-bis-(isobutyl) thio-, dibutyl thio-, N,N1-tetramethylene thio-, bis-(alpha-naphthyl) thio-, tetramethyl thio-, N,N1-bis - (n - butyl) thio -, s - bis - (2 - methyl - 3-chlorophenyl) thio-, and bis-(3-benzofuryl) thiourea. The stabilized compositions may be melt extruded or injection moulded into articles such as films and fibres. Specification 557,873 also is referred to. |
