titleOfInvention | Process for the production of condensation products with tanning properties |
abstract | Tanning agents are produced by condensing a mono- or di-sulphonic acid of a hydrocarbon containing at least two condensed aromatic nuclei or a mixture of such acids, an o-chlorophenol and an aliphatic aldehyde, the o-chlorophenol and aldehyde being simultaneously but separately introduced into the sulphonic acid while condensing the resultant mixture. The chlorophenol should have at least one free o or p position. Up to two mols. each of chlorophenol and aldehyde can be condensed per mol. of sulphonic acid. In examples (1) naphthalene is sulphonated with sulphuric acid and to the product o-chlorophenol and formaldehyde are added separately over an hour the mixture being condensed for a further hour. The final product is neutralized with ammonia and adjusted to pH 3.2 to 3.5 with acetic and formic acids. (2) Similar to (1), a small amount of formaldehyde being added after the addition of the chlorophenol. (3) As in (1) using 6-chloro-m-cresol instead of o-chlorophenol. (4) Phenanthrene is sulphonated and the sulphonic acid reacted with o-chlorophenol and formaldehyde as in example (1). (5) Anthracene is sulphonated and the products reacted with o-chlorophenol and formaldehyde as in example (1). (6) Naphthalene is sulphonated and the product reacted as in example (1) with formaldehyde and a chlorination mixture of phenol containing both o- and p-chlorophenols. The resulting solutions may be evaporated after neutralizing to give solid products to which may be added solid acid reacting substances such as sodium bi-sulphate, oxalic acid and citric acid, to give pulverulent tannins. All the products on neutralizing and adjustment of pH dissolve in water and have good tanning action and dissolve the sludge and phlobaphene of organic tanning solutions. Specification 430,343 is referred to. |
