titleOfInvention Tanning process
abstract 747,094. Tanning leather. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. June 6, 1952 [June 30, 1951], No. 14340/52. Class 76. In a tanning process, there are employed as tannins amphoteric substances obtained by condensing more than one, preferably from one to ten, mols. polyvalent phenol with one mol. of a salt of ammonia or of a salt of an amine and with an aldehyde, the substances being used in the form of their water-soluble, acid-reacting salts, and the process is carried out so that the acidity of the tannin solution decreases towards the end of the tanning, the optimum pH, which has between 4.3 and 7 being obtained, if necessary, by treating the tanning solution with alkali or ammonia. The compounds used are suitably produced by the process of Specifications 747,092 and 747,093,. [both in Group IV (a)], examples being condensation products of (i) resorcinol, ammonium chloride and formaldehyde, (ii) " brenzoel," aniline hydrochloride and formaldehyde (" brenzoel " being the residue obtained by the removal of monovalent phenols from phenolic oils extracted by solvents from the waste liquors from the low temperature carbonization of lignites &c.), (iii) " brenzoel," ethanoline and formaldehyde. The tanning process may be effected prior to or after (but not simultaneously with) tanning by other agents, e.g. vegetable, synthetic or chrome tannins, formaldehyde, paraffin sulphochlorides, fish oils, lignin sulphonic acids.
