titleOfInvention Manufacture of bis-(-a-hydroxyalkyl-)polysulphides
abstract A process for preparing a bis-(b -hydroxyalkyl-) polysulphide comprises (a) heating in an aqueous medium a 1,2-alkylene oxide with an alkali metal- or alkaline earth metal polysulphide in the presence of sufficient sulphur to convert the base liberated to thiosulphate and to bring about the desired degree of sulphurization; or (b) introducing a 1,2-alkylene oxide into an aqueous mixture of an alkali metal- or alkaline earth metal polysulphide and sufficient sulphur to convert the base liberated to thiosulphate and to bring about the desired degree of sulphurization; or (c) forming an aqueous mixture of sulphur and an alkali metal- or alkaline earth metalhydroxide or monosulphide and introducing a 1,2-alkylene oxide, there being initially sufficient sulphur to convert the base liberated to thiosulphate and to bring about the desired degree of sulphurization. A wetting agent may be employed to facilitate the solution of the sulphur in the aqueous medium, e.g. an alkyl or aralkyl sulphonate or other surface-active substance indifferent to the reactants. In examples: bis-(hydroxyethyl-) polysulphide, which may be reduced, e.g. with sodium amalgam to hydroxyethyl-mercaptan, is obtained by heating a mixture of sodium sulphide, sulphur, water and dibutyl-naphthalene sulphate and, when the sulphur has dissolved with the formation of sodium polysulphide, cooling and adding ethylene oxide. Specification 733,947 is referred to.
