titleOfInvention Process for purifying acrylonitrile formed by synthesis from acetylene and hydrogen cyanide
abstract Acrylonitrile obtained by synthesis from acetylene and hydrogen cyanide and containing hydrogen cyanide in free and/or combined form as an impurity is purified by treating it with ferrous sulphate in an aqueous alkaline medium made alkaline by addition of a neutralizing substance comprising a basic compound capable of forming a ferrocyanide with the ferrous ion and hydrogen cyanide, preferably a hydroxide, carbonate, or bicarbonate of sodium, potassium, ammonium, barium, calcium, strontium, or magnesium. The neutralizing substances may be employed alone or in admixture. The treatment may be effected at about 20 DEG to 70 DEG C. and preferably at below 40 DEG C. Two layers are formed in the process, an upper layer containing purified acrylonitrile and a lower aqueous layer containing the ferrocyanide formed together with some acrylonitrile which may be recovered by azeotropic distillation. When part of the hydrogen cyanide is present in combined form as lactonitrile the acetaldehyde remaining in the purified acrylonitrile is readily removable by distillation. In examples acrylonitrile containing 2.5 per cent acetaldehyde is placed in a vessel provided with a reflux condenser and ferrous sulphate solution followed by sodium hydroxide solution added, the temperature being maintained at 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. Acrylonitrile is recovered from the two layers formed; (2) and (3) as in (1) except that an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide and of calcium oxide respectively are used instead of the sodium hydroxide solution.
