titleOfInvention | Esters of penicillin |
abstract | The invention comprises penicillin esters of the formula <FORM:0745568/IV(a)/1> where R1 is an alkylene radical (preferably of 1-5 carbon atoms) and R2 is an anion such as chloride, bromide or iodide, and metal complex salts thereof. These are made by (1) reacting a penicillin derivative Pen-COO-R1-R2 with trimethylamine; (2) quaternating <FORM:0745568/IV(a)/2> with a methyl halide; or (3) esterifying penicillin or its salt, anhydride or acyl halide with a compound of the formula <FORM:0745568/IV(a)/3> where X is halogen or hydroxyl; the metal complexes are prepared by treating the soformed quaternary salts with metal halides under anhydrous conditions. The starting materials for method (1) are made by reacting penicillin salts with alkylene dihalides. In the examples: (1) sodium penicillin G is reacted with dimethylaminoethyl chloride and the product treated with methyl iodide; (2) as in (1) using methyl bromide for the quaternation; (3) sodium penicillin G is condensed with ethylene dibromide and the product treated with trimethylamine; (4) potassium penicillin G is reacted with b -bromoethyl-trimethylammonium bromide; (5) the product of (1) is converted into its complexes with manganous chloride, cobaltous chloride and zinc chloride. There may be used penicillins of the formula <FORM:0745568/IV(a)/4> where R1 is methyl or hydrogen and R2 is an organic radical such as benzyl, p-hydroxybenzyl, pentyl, heptyl, phenoxymethyl or allylthio. Danish Specification 74,087 is referred to. |
