titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the dyeing of hair and other keratinous materials
abstract Hair and other keratinous material is dyed by the aerobic oxidation thereon of mono- or orthodi-hydroxybenzene or an alkyl substituent thereof having an unsubstituted position para with respect to a hydroxy group or, in the case of the monohydroxy compounds, having an unsubstituted position ortho with respect to the hydroxy group and a second unsubstituted position para with respect either to the hydroxy group or said unsubstituted ortho position, the oxidation being promoted by a small amount of an extract containing the enzyme tyrosinase. An aqueous solution of the two components may be applied to the hair or, alternatively, a solution of the hydrobenzene compound may be applied first followed by the extract of the enzyme. Specified hydroxybenzene compounds are phenol, catechol, m- and p-cresol. Examples are given of the dyeing of hair and, in one case, of the dyeing of wool.
