abstract | Fish meal is prepared by treating raw fish or portions thereof, in the absence of extraneous water, with an acid coagulant to give the mixture a pH of 4.5 to 6.0, and pressing or otherwise mechanically treating the acidulated mass to separate liquid and solid. Acids specified are hydrochloric, sulphuric and acetic. Temperatures up to 160 DEG F. may be used. The Provisional Specification describes the use of formalin, ferric chloride and ammonium sulphate as coagulants, and when the pH is to be reduced below 7, adding an acid as well. |
