titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to polyvinyl chloride compositions
abstract A synthetic resin composition comprises a polyvinyl chloride paste, a thermosettable epoxy resin and a hardener for the epoxy resin. Preferred epoxy resins are those resulting from the condensation of di-phenylol propane and epichlorhydrin. The hardener may be diethylene triamine, diethylamine, benzyldimethylamine, piperidine, an acid anhydride, cyanamide, or an aldehyde condensation product containing etherified methylol groups. The epoxy resin is preferably present in an amount of from 3 per cent to 40 per cent by weight of the composition and the hardener is preferably present in an amount of from 6 to 10 per cent by weight of the epoxy resin. A volatile organic diluent such as petroleum ether may also be present to dilute the composition to sprayable consistency. The composition is preferably prepared by forming a polyvinyl chloride paste containing the epoxy resin, forming a second paste containing the hardener and intimately mixing the two pastes. The second paste may be a polyvinyl chloride paste and may contain a small amount of pigment, and each paste may contain an organophilic clay such as bentonite or aluminium or magnesium stearate. The plasticizer component of the polyvinyl chloride paste may be dioctyl phthalate, and lead stearate may also be included as stabilizer. The composition may be used to form a strongly adherent coating on fabric, metal, glass or ceramic material by applying the composition to the surface and subjecting the coated surface to the action of an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to effect the gelation of the polyvinyl chloride paste and curing of the epoxy resin.ALSO:Metal, glass and ceramic materials are coated with a composition comprising a polyvinyl chloride paste, a thermosettable epoxy resin and a hardener for the epoxy resin (see Group IV(a)) by applying the composition to the surface of the material and subjecting the coated surface to the action of an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to effect the gelation of the polyvinyl chloride paste and the curing of the epoxy resin.
