titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the production of heating oil blends |
abstract | A heating oil blend is prepared by washing a cracked mercaptan-containing petroleum heating oil fraction with aqueous caustic alkali prior to any contact of the fraction with air, partially sweetening a virgin mercaptan-containing petroleum heating oil fraction and blending the respective treated fractions. The caustic alkali washing procedure for the cracked component of the blend may in some cases be supplemented by a more severe treating operation such as that involving sulphuric acid. Also the virgin heating oil fraction subjected to partial sweetening may in some cases contain a minor proportion of cracked components boiling in the heating oil range (about 350-750 DEG F.). The partial sweetening may be effected by treatment with aqueous caustic alkali in the presence of air or by treatment with hypochlorite. Apparatus is described in which a crude petroleum oil is fractionated by distillation to yield normally gaseous hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons boiling below about 350 DEG F., a virgin heating oil fraction, a gas oil fraction and a residuum fraction. The virgin heating oil fraction is given a preliminary caustic alkali wash and then partially sweetened, for example to a copper number of about 15-30, by treatment with caustic alkali in presence of air. The gas oil fraction is cracked thermally or catalytically, preferably using a fluidized catalyst, and a heating oil fraction is separated from the cracking products. Before contact with air, this cracked heating oil fraction is washed with caustic alkali and is then blended with the partially sweetened virgin heating oil fraction. Specification 738,152 is referred to. |
