titleOfInvention Organotin derivatives of mercaptoalcohols
abstract Vinyl chloride polymers are stabilized against heat deterioration by addition of a condensation product of an organo-tin compound with a mercapto alcohol in which each mercaptyl hydrogen atom is replaced by a bond to an organotin group and each hydroxyl hydrogen atom is either intact or replaced by a bond to an organotin group. The stabilizers are of general formula <FORM:0743313/IV(a)/1> where R is an alkyl, alkonyl, alkynyl, aryl or aralkyl group, R1 is a bivalent aliphatic or aromatic radical, n is 1, 2 or 3 and m is an integer of value from 0 to 4 - n (see Group IV (b)). Plasticizers (e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) may be present.ALSO:The invention comprises condensation products of an organo-tin compound with a mercaptoalcohol, in which each mercapto hydrogen atom is replaced by a bond to an organo-tin group and each hydroxyl hydrogen atom is either intact or replaced by a bond to an organo-tin group. The products are of the general formula <FORM:0743313/IV(a)/1> where R is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl or aralkyl group, R1 is a bivalent aliphatic or aromatic radical, n is 1, 2, or 3 and m is an integer of value from 0 to 4 - n. Compounds of the following types may be obtained R3SnSR1OH; R3SnSR1OSnR3; <FORM:0743313/IV(a)/2> <FORM:0743313/IV(a)/3> Specified mercaptoalcohols include beta-mercaptoethanol, 3 - mercaptopropanol - 1, 2-mercaptopropanol - 1, 1 - mercaptopropanol - 2, 2-, 3 - or 4 - mercapto - n - butanol - 1 and o-, m- and p-mercaptobenzyl alcohol. The condensation may take place using an organo-tin compound containing a negative group attached to the tin atom such as an organo-tin oxide (R2SnO), hydroxide (R3SnOH), halide or a stannoic acid (RSnOOH). When using the organotin halides, a base such as sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, tertiary amines or pyridine should be present in the reaction mixture to neutralize the mineral acid formed. Reaction may be carried out at temperatures slightly above 100 DEG C. to remove the water formed, or at lower temperatures with subsequent heating. Inert organic solvents (benzene, toluene) may be present. The compounds of the invention may be used as stabilizers for chlorine-containing synthetic resins (see Group IV (a)), rubber accelerators, rubber antioxidants, polymerization accelerators and petroleum additives. The examples describe the preparation of (C4H9)2Sn(SC2H4OH)2 and <FORM:0743313/IV(a)/4> from dibutyltin oxide and betamercaptoethanol.ALSO:Condensation products of organotin compounds with mercapto alcohol in which each mercaptyl hydrogen atom is replaced by a bond to an organotin group and each hydroxyl hydrogen atom is either intact or replaced by a bond to an organotin group are used as rubber antioxidants and accelerators. The compounds are of general formula <FORM:0743313/V/1> where R is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl or aralkyl group, R1 is bivalent aliphatic or aromatic radical, n is 1, 2 or 3 and m is an integer of value from 0 to 4-n (see Group IV (b)).
