titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to copolymers of trifluorochloroethylene and vinylidene fluoride and method for their preparation |
abstract | Copolymers of trifluorochloroethylene and vinylidene fluoride containing from 69 to 80 mols. per cent of trifluorochloroethylene are prepared by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers containing from 75 to 90 mols. per cent of trifluorochloroethylene at a temperature between - 25 DEG C. and 50 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst. Polymerization may be effected in aqueous suspension in the presence of potassium, sodium or ammonium persulphate and preferably also in the presence of sodium or potassium bisulphite and a metal salt of variable valency such as ferrous sulphate or nitrate, or a mass polymerization system may be used in which the preferred catalysts are trichloroacetyl, trifluoroacetyl, difluoroacetyl, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl, chloroacetyl, trifluorodichloropropionyl and dichlorofluoroacetyl peroxides. Modifiers such as chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroacetyl chloride, dodecyl mercaptan and bromotrichloromethane may be incorporated in the reaction mixture. Monomers may be added incrementally or continuously to maintain the monomer composition constant. The copolymers may be applied as coatings to metal or fabric surfaces in solution in solvents such as di-isobutyl, methyl ethyl and methyl isobutyl ketones, cyclohexanone, methoxy, ethoxy and ethoxy ethoxy ethanols, methyl and butyl acetates and ethyl benzoate. Specification 593,605 is referred to. |
