titleOfInvention Improvements in fluorescent material
abstract Brightening or fluorescing agents for addition to plastics, fibres and inorganic solids comprise the carboxylic acid amides, urethanes or ureas of 4-aminonaphthalene - 1.8 - dicarboxylic acid imides. The compounds are prepared in known manner from the 4-aminonaphthalene - 1.8 - dicarboxylic acid imide itself or the corresponding N-methyl, propyl, hexyl, hydroxyethyl, cyclohexyl, allyl, stearyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, or naphthyl imide by reaction with carboxylic acid chlorides or anhydrides, phosgene, isocyanates or chlorocarbonic acid esters. The acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, valeroyl, stearoyl, oleyl, benzoyl or chlorobenzoyl amides of 4-amino-naphthalene - 1.8 - dicarboxylic acid N-butylimide or their reaction products with chlorocarbonic acid ethyl, butyl, phenyl or benzyl esters are stated to be suitable agents fluorescing blue to yellow with short wave light. The compounds are associated with plastics or artificial fibres, e.g., polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyacrylic acid esters, polyamides, polyurethanes or copolymers, or regenerated cellulose or cellulose esters or ethers, or with natural fibres during shaping or subsequently or with inorganic pigments such as alumina, blanc fixe or lithopone in amounts of 0.001 - 2 per cent. The compounds are normally ground or kneaded with dispersing agents e.g. alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acids or hydroxyethylation products of fatty alcohols or fatty acids or cane sugar. Coloured pigments and threads are obtained by mixing the compounds with dyestuffs e.g. water-soluble dyestuffs including azo, azomethine and polymethine dyestuffs many of which are specified and water insoluble dyestuffs such as 1.4 - dibutyl-aminoanthraquinone, heavy metal complexes of heteropoly acids e.g. phosphomolybdic - tungstic acid, phthalocyanines and the water soluble reaction product of tris - chloromethyl - phthalocyanine with thio-urea are also instanced. The brightening agents may also be combined with fluorescing dyestuffs with or without the presence of non-fluorescing dyestuffs. Examples are Rhodamine, Auramine, Auracine or Thioflavine. The agents are admixed with polyvinyl chlorides and polyacrylic compounds, with rayon, polyamide and cotton fibres or fabrics; with polymethacrylate or polyurethane plastics or with soaps and detergents and are used to treat leather and skins. Many examples are given.
