titleOfInvention Preparation of-a-,-a-dichloropropionic acid esters
abstract Esters of a -b -dichloropropionic acid are obtained by chlorinating the corresponding acrylic esters in presence of 1-10 per cent of a weak N-heterocyclic base such as pyridine quinoline &c. A polymerization inhibitor may also be present. Examples are given of the chlorination in presence of pyridine, of methyl acrylate with if desired small quantities of hydroquinone, to give methyl a -b -dichloropropionate; dehydrochlorination of this product gives methyl a -chloracrylate. Other acrylic esters specified include those of other aliphatic mono-, di- and tri-hydric alcohols, alicyclic, araliphatic and heterocyclic alcohols; esters of unsaturated alcohols give products which are saturated chloroalkyl esters; other heterocyclic bases specified include picolines, quinolines, and O-and S-containing N-heterocyclic compounds.
