titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to silicone rubbers
abstract A composition comprises an organopolysiloxane convertible by heat to the cured, solid, elastic state and 0.25 to 10 per cent by weight of the siloxane of an additive selected from quinones, naphthoquinones, alkylated and halogenated quinones, and naphthoquinones and hydrocarbon monoethers of hydroquinone. The compositions may also contain cure accelerators, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate and zirconyl nitrate, and fillers such as silica aerogel, titania, calcium silicate, diatomaceous earth, ferric oxide, chromic oxide, cadmium sulphide, zinc oxide, asbestos, glass fibres, calcium carbonate, carbon black, lithopone, and talc, and may be moulded, extruded or otherwise shaped as by heating under pressure to give elastic products. In examples dimethylpolysiloxane is used with (1 to 6) 2.5-ditertiarybutylquinone, and (7) monomethyl ether of hydroquinone, chloranil (tetrachloroquinone), quinone, 2.6-dichloroquinone and 1.4-naphthoquinone. Other additives specified are 1.2-quinone, 1.2-naphthoquinone, tertiarybutylquinone, ethylquinone, 2.6-di-tertiarybutylquinone, 2.3-ditertiarybutylnaphthyl quinone, trichloroquinone, tetrachloronaphthoquinone, and mono-benzyl, -phenyl, -butyl and -propyl ethers of hydroquinone. The specified additives reduce the compression set of the elastomers. The cured products are used for making gaskets, tubing, electrical insulation and shock absorbers. Specifications 594,481, 618,453, 630,883 and 640,067 are referred to.
