titleOfInvention New hydrazones of ketosteroids
abstract The invention comprises the benzilic hydrazone of keto steroids having the formula <FORM:0738230/IV (b)/1> where <FORM:0738230/IV (b)/2> is a keto steroid (e.g. estrone, cortisone 21-esters, desoxycortisone 21 - esters, cis - testosterone, 21 esters of 3 : 11 : 20 - triketo - 17a :21 - dihydroxypregnane and 3b - hydroxy - 25 - keto D 5-27-norcholestene) and the purification of ketosteroids by preparing said hydrazone and separating by selective precipitation, followed by regeneration of the ketone, e.g. by acid hydrolysis or functional exchange with another ketone or an aldehyde. The hydrazone may be formed in a neutral solvent, e.g. methanol, isopropanol, dioxane or benzene, in the presence of an organic acid containing 7 carbon atoms or less, e.g. acetic acid. Examples describe the preparation of the compounds set out above and in addition the hydrazones of androstanolone benzoate, equilin and equilenin.
