titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to production of cellular structure |
abstract | A cellular structure is produced in polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer dispersed in sufficient plasticizer to provide a free-flowing mass, by dispersing an inert gas throughout this mass in a closed container while maintaining within the container a pressure exceeding 100 lb./sq. inch, and discharging the mass from the container under the influence of the pressure maintained in the container and at a temperature below the gelling temperature of the mass, the mass being discharged in an ungelled state in the form of an expanded creamy foam. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously. The gas may be dispersed in the resin by agitating the container, by passing the gas upwardly through the resin or by passing the resin through foraminous screens disposed concentrically in the container. Specified plasticizers are ester-type plasticizers such as phosphates, phthalates, adipates, sebacates, azelates, glycollates or an aromatic hydrocarbon oil, e.g. dioctyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate, while the inert gas may be carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, helium or mixtures thereof. A water-insoluble metallic salt of a fatty acid containing from 12 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule, e.g. aluminium stearate is preferably also present. The proportion of fatty acid salt to plasticizer may be one part salt to 50 to 200 parts plasticizer. It is preferred to mix the salt and plasticizer and add the mixture to the polymer, preferably by dispersing the salt in a small quantity of plasticizer, heating it slowly to 230 DEG F., maintaining this temperature until the salt is melted, cooling to room temperature and then adding additional plasticizer. |
