titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to steroid compounds
abstract The invention comprises a cyclopentanophenanthrene compound having at C-17 a side chain of the formula <FORM:0737291/IV (b)/1> wherein Ac is an acyl group derived from a lower aliphatic acid containing not more than five carbon atoms and R is hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy or acyloxy and the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 17a -hydroxy-20-keto compound with the anhydride of a lower aliphatic acid. The reaction may be effected at a temperature in excess of about 100 DEG C. in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric or p-toluene sulfonic acid. Examples disclose the preparation of allopregnene - 17a ,21 - diol - 3,11,20 - trione 17,21-diacetate, pregnane - 3a ,17a ,21 - triol - 11,20-dione - 3,17,21 - triacetate, D 4 - pregnene-17a ,21 - diol - 3,11,20 - trione 17,21 - diacetate pregnane - 3a , 17a - diol - 11,20 - dione 3,17-diacetate. Specific starting materials mentioned are D 4 - pregnene - 3,11,20 - trione - 17a - ol-21 - methoxy, allopregnane - 17a ,21 - triol - 20-one 3,21 - diacetate, D 4 - pregnene - 17a ,21-diol - 3,20 - dione 21 - acetate, allopregnane-3,17a - diol - 20 - one - 3 - acetate, D 4 - pregnene - 17a - ol - 3,20 - dione, D 4 - allopregnene-17a - ol - 20 - one and pregnane - 17a ,21 - diol-3,11,20-trione 21-acetate.
