abstract 734,180. Pianofortes. BALDWIN CO. Dec. 15, 1953, No. 34941/53. Class 88 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A wrest plank for a piano is made of crossgrained resin-bonded plies of hard wood such as sugar maple, the thickness of the plies being in the range 1/8 to 1/28 inch. The ratio of hole diameter to pin diameter is between 0.925 and 0.96. The resin is preferably chosen and applied so that the plywood has a specific gravity between 0.72 and 0.87. The plywood may be either hot pressed or cold pressed. The resin used for hot pressing may be a thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde resin condensate carried to the point of an A stage resin, a urea formaldehyde resin or a resin of the acrylonitrile or melamine type. For cold pressing, condensation products of resorcinol and formaldehyde may be used with a catalyst, if necessary. In one example, two separate sets of 19 plies of 1/28 inch sugar maple are cooled with adhesive and pressed between platens heated to 300- 310‹ F. for 25 minutes. After cooling, the two structures are bonded together by inserting between them one 1/28 inch ply of the maple coated with a resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesive and a catalyst. The plywood is left to set and then cut to shape.
