titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to self-sealing article |
abstract | A self-sealing composition comprises a rubbery copolymer of a major proportion of an iso-olefine having 4 to 7 carbon atoms, and a minor proportion of an open-chain conjugated di-olefine having 4 to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. copolymers of isobutylene or ethyl methyl ethylene with isoprene, butadiene-1,3, piperylene, 2,3-, 1,2-, 1,3-, or 1,4-dimethyl-butadiene-1,3, and 1-ethyl butadiene-1,3, 0.2 to 1.0 per cent by weight of said copolymer of a curing agent, from 0.5 to 4 per cent of an auxiliary curing agent, and from 60 to 95 per cent of black iron oxide. The curing agent is selected from sulphur with mercaptobenzothiazole accelerator, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, p-quinone dioxime, and p,p1-dibenzoylquinone dioxime, and the auxiliary curing agent is selected from metallic peroxides, e.g. lead, barium, zinc, copper, potassium, silver, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium pyrophosphate peroxides; metallic peroxy-borates, -chromates, -columbates, -dicarbonates, -diphosphates, -disulphates, -germanates, -molybdates, -monocarbonates, -monophosphates, -monosulphates, nitrates; organic peroxides such as caproyl, lauryl, heptoyl, capryl, nonyl, undecyl, tridecyl, myristyl, phenacetyl and benzoyl peroxides; metallic polysulphides such as calcium, sodium, potassium, and barium polysulphides and organic polysulphides such as alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, acyl alkyl and alkylaryl polysulphides. Antioxidants, softeners, tackifiers, pigments, fillers and reinforcing agents may be included and the composition may be cured at 250-390 DEG F. for 5 to 180 minutes to give a partially cured product. Examples describe compositions of an isobutylene-isoprene copolymer, black iron oxide, stearic acid, zinc oxide, p-quinone dioxime, softeners, such as a low molecular weight liquid isobutylene, high molecular weight isobutylene and paraffin oil, and as a tackifier a non-reactive unmodified phenolformaldehyde resin, cured with zinc peroxide, calcium polysulphide and lead peroxide respectively. After partial vulcanization they are used to form self-sealing layers in tyres or inner tubes. |
