titleOfInvention Manufacture of genins
abstract Genins, e.g. hecogenin, are obtained by reacting the residue obtained by the treatment with acid of crude glycoside containing steroid sapogenin, e.g. from Agave sisalana, with an alkaline earth hydroxide, especially milk of lime, and the insoluble portion of the reaction mixture is separated and extracted with one or more solvents, e.g. diethyl ether, ethylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, benzene or petroleum ether. As starting material there may be used in addition the residue obtained from crude glycoside by treatment with acid, followed by treatment with an alkali metal hydroxide and by acidification.
