abstract | Pyrrolidone is polymerized by heating at 75-180 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst to produce polymers having the formula <FORM:0731294/IV (a)/1> The effective catalyst appears to be sodium, potassium or lithium pyrrolidone since the reaction is catalysed by addition of sodium, potassium or lithium or a hydroxide, oxide or easily decomposable salt, e.g. carbonate of one of these metals. Alkyls or aryls of these metals, e.g. butyl lithium or sodium phenyl, or sodium amide may also be used. In example I, pyrrolidone is heated in vacuo with potassium hydroxide pellets, water being removed by distillation. Heating is continued at 160 DEG C. for six hours in an inert atmosphere. Unchanged pyrrolidone is removed by distillation and the residue worked free from catalyst and water-soluble impurities, and dried. It may be further purified by solution in 6N HCl, treatment with decolourizing carbon and re-precipitation with ammonia. Examples II-VI are similar employing sodium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, sodium carbonate, potassium hydroxide or metallic sodium as catalyst. In Example VII pyrrolidone is first heated with potassium hydroxide pellets and the mixture then heated with more dry pyrrolidone. The products are thermoplastic, suitable for moulding or for extrusion as fibres or filaments, and may be compounded with conventional additives, e.g. fillers, plasticizers, pigments or dyes. |
