abstract | The cinnamic acid, o-chloro-, a -phenyl-, b -phenyl- or m-nitro-cinnamic acid esters of cellulose or a hydroxyl-containing derivative of cellulose such as esterification grade cellulose, hydrolysed cellulose acetate, hydroxyethyl (or propyl) cellulose or b -hydroxyethyl cellulose are made by heating the corresponding acid chloride with a dispersion of the cellulose material in pyridine, dilution with dioxane or acetone and filtration if required, and pouring into water to precipitate the ester. The b -hydroxyethyl cellulose is made by precipitating an aqueous solution of commercial cellulose hydroxyethyl ether into a large excess of ethyl alcohol, washing the precipitate with fresh alcohol and drying. Specifications 365,250, 392,206 and 713,947 are referred to. |
