titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to safety devices for appliances making, using, treatingor purifying combustible gases
abstract <PICT:0729935/III/1> Apparatus for testing a combustible gas and for protecting apparatus (e.g. electrostatic detarrers) in which an explosion may occur if the proportion of oxygen in the gas is too high, comprises an igniting means within a conduit conveying gas to the apparatus to be protected, a chamber surrounding the igniting means and open at both ends, a second conduit conveying air to the chamber, and a flame detecting device in the chamber adapted, should the flame spread away from the igniting means, to operate a warning or indicating device or to shut down the apparatus, and to stop the supply of air to the chamber, remove the igniting means, and extinguish the flame. As shown, air is introduced at 26 through chamber 15 and duct 14 into chamber 28 where it mixes with gas entering from the main conduit through an inlet port in chamber 28; the mixture passes to flame chamber 11 in which is arranged a shrouded pilot jet 16 supplied with air from inlet 27 via conduit 25. If the gas contains too much oxygen, the flame spreads and burns or melts a combustible or fusible thread 23, thus releasing spring-loaded mercury switch 24 which operates warning and safety devices. Other suitable igniting means are a small combustion chamber of the type described in Specification 535,482, [Group XIII], supplied with air and gas, an electrically heated wire, an electric arc, a spark gap, or an electric discharge produced between a high tension electrode and the earthed chamber. The spread of the flame may also be detected by an electrical conductor sensitive to changes in temperature, by an electronic device in which the ionizing effect of the flame enables current to flow between two electrodes, or by making the combustible thread itself part of an electrical circuit which when broken operates the safety device. The pilot jet may be lit by means of an incandescent wire, an electric arc, a spark gap, an ignition tube, or an explosion cartridge. Means may be provided to give warning or actuate the safety devices if the igniting means is inoperative; such means may include a brinetallic strip, a thermocouple, an electronic conductor sensitive to changes in temperature, or an electronic device. The testing apparatus may be surrounded by a water or steam jacket to keep the thread dry and free from tar deposits. In order to extinguish the flame when the safety device operates, the chamber and the conduit are purged with a fire or explosion suppressing substance, e.g. steam, carbon tetrachloride, methyl bromide, or carbon dioxide, as described in Specification 643,188, [Group XXI]. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with a differential pressure switch actuated by pressure drop across the detarrer, and with a burner of the type described in Specification 676,282, supplied with gas from the outlet of the detarrer.
