abstract | The invention comprises 4-pregnene-3,6,11,20-tetraone and the preparation thereof by reacting 6,11-dihydroxyprogesterone with more than one equivalent (preferably about two equivalents) of oxidizing agent per mol. of 6,11-dihydroxyprogesterone for a time sufficient to convert to keto the 6- and 11-hydroxy groups without similar conversion elsewhere in the molecule. Suitably, potassium permanganate, N-bromacetamide in t.-butanol, or chromic acid may be used as oxidant. |
