abstract Substituted ethylenes, in which one hydrogen atom of ethylene is substituted by fluorine and the other hydrogen atoms are either unsubstitituted or substituted by fluorine, chlorine or bromine, are polymerized alone or in admixture with other copolymerizable ethylene derivatives in the absence of water but in the presence of ozone and/or a reaction product of ozone and an ethylene derivative containing fluorine, which ethylene derivative is preferably the substance being polymerized. The ozone is preferably employed in solution in an organic solvent such as ethyl chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichloromonofluoromethane and trifluorotrichloroethane, which solvent may take part in the reaction by causing telomerization or p chain-stopping. Examples describe the polymerization of trifluorochloroethylene, and the copolymerization thereof with vinylidene chloride.
