titleOfInvention | Crystallizable pentaene aldehyde complexes |
abstract | The invention comprises a crystallizable complex of a compound of the formula <FORM:0728990/IV (b)/1> where A is either an oxygen or a nitrogen group, B is either a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, n is an integer equal to the valency of A minus one, and each of the symbols Y and Z represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or an alkyl group, at least one of B, Y and Z being other than a hydrogen atom; and a 2,6-trans, trans pentaene aldehyde having the formula <FORM:0728990/IV (b)/2> or <FORM:0728990/IV (b)/3> and the process of separating a trans, trans pentaenal having the vitamin A carbon skeleton from a mixture with its isomers by the formation of said complex. As complex-forming compounds there may be used 2-methyl-, -ethyl-, or -t-amyl-hydroquinone; 2,5-di-methyl, di-ethyl-, or di-t-amyl-hydroquinone; 2,5-dichlorohydroquinone; p-methoxy, -ethoxy- or butoxy phenol; o-methyl-p-methoxy phenol; p-dimethylamino, and -diethylaminophenol; and o-methyl-p-dimethyl aminophenol. The separation of the complex can be effected by standard procedures such as solvent partition or crystallization. |
