abstract The invention comprises quaternary salts of acridan derivatives of formula <FORM:0727635/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl residues which may be closed to form a ring) with arylsulphonic acid esters. The compounds are prepared by heating the acridan derivative with an arylsulphonic acid ester in a solvent such as benzene, toluene or decahydronaphthalene. In the examples N-piperidylethylacridan is reacted with methyl para-toluenesulphonate and N-diethylaminoethylacridan is reacted with methyl para-toluenesulphonate, methyl benzenesulphonate and phenyl benzenesulphonate respectively. Diethylaminoethylacridan (the hydrochloride of which is described) and N-piperidylethylacridan are prepared by reacting dihydroacridine in a toluene solution containing an alkaline substance (e.g. sodium amide, phenyllithium, finely dispersed metallic sodium or potassium, or powdered potassium hydroxide) with 1-diethylamino-2-chloroethane and b -chloroethylpiperidine respectively.
