titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the bonding of vinyl chloride polymers to fibre-forming materials
abstract 727,570. Polyvinyl chloride-coated and laminated fabrics and films; fabrics composed of adhesively-bonded yarns. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. May 29, 1952 [May 31, 1951], No. 12882/51. Addition to 680,337. Class 140. Coated, laminated, or composite materials are made by causing a thermoplastic polymer of vinyl chloride, used as a coating or adhesive, to adhere to a synthetic resin coated, heatstable, fibre-forming material composed of a linear polymer containing recurring units of carbon, hydrogen, and an element more electronegative than carbon, the synthetic resin coating on the fibre-forming material consisting of a water-insoluble, alcohol-soluble condensation product of an aldehyde with a phenol in molar proportions between 0.5 and 1.1 to 1. The composite material may be a web of the vinyl polymer reinforced with yarns of the fibrous material, fabrics of the fibrous material coated with the vinyl polymer, a laminate in which fabrics of or containing the fibrous material are bonded together by the vinyl polymer, coated or laminated films made of the fibre-forming material using the vinyl polymer as coating or adhesive. The fabric laminates may be used as conveyer belting or semi-stiff collars and the coated fabrics as printers' blankets. The vinyl chloride polymer, which may consist of vinyl chloride polymerized by itself or with one or more of vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, or methacrylonitrile, may be applied as a solution, a paste, or a preformed film. Tricresyl phosphate, one of several specified di-esters of phthalic acid, dibutyl adipate, polymeric 1.2-propylene glycol sebacate, and copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile may be present as plasticizers for the vinyl chloride polymer, while the solution may be prepared with the aid of mixtures of cyclohexanone or cyclopentanone with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, carbon bisulphide with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone with methyl isobutyl ketone, or tetramethylene oxide. The linear polymeric, fibre forming material may be natural or regenerated cellulose, e.g. high tenacity continuous filament regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, poly-4-amino-1.2.4-triazole, polyacrylonitrile, natural silk, casein, zein, groundnut or soya-bean protein. The fabrics may be woven or knitted from staple fibre or continuous filament yarn, or felts may be coated or laminated. The synthetic resin may be made by condensing an aldehyde such as formaldehyde or acetaldehyde with a phenol such as phenol or resorcinol in molar ratios of between 8.5 and 11 to 10, if desired in the presence of a plasticizer such as methyl, ethyl, or butyl phthalyl ethyl or butyl glycollate, o- and ptoluene sulphonamide, or diphenyl phthalate. The fabric may be waterproofed, e.g. by treatment with alkoxy silanes or co-ordination compounds of chromic chloride with acrylic acid, before coating with the synthetic resin. Specifications 658,180 and 680,338 are referred to.
