titleOfInvention Improvements in the production of anthranyl vinyl ethers
abstract A process for the production of anthranyl vinyl ethers consists in reacting anthrone or anthranol-(9) or their mono- or poly-alkyl derivatives which have their alkyl groups attached to the aromatic nucleus with acetylene in the presence of carboxylic acid salts of zinc or cadmium at elevated temperatures. The reaction is preferably effected at temperatures between 100 DEG and 300 DEG C. and at a partial pressure of acetylene between 10 and 25 atmospheres, preferably in the presence of an indifferent gas, and the acetylene content is preferably not more than 70 per cent by volume. Solvents in which the reaction may be effected include benzene, toluene, xylene, tetrahydrofurane and dioxane. Suitable catalysts are the zinc or cadmium salts of stearic, naphthenic, acetic, formic, propionic, butyric, valeric, a -methyl-valeric, oleic, and abietic acids. In examples (1) to (4) anthranyl vinyl ether is prepared by reacting (1) to (3) anthrone, and (4) anthranol-(9), with acetylene in the presence of zinc stearate, zinc acetate, cadmium stearate and zinc stearate respectively; small amounts of dianthrone and anthraquinone are obtained as by-products; (5) 1,4-dimethylanthranyl-(9) vinyl ether is prepared by reacting 1,4-dimethylanthrone and acetylene in the presence of zinc stearate.
