titleOfInvention Mixed polymerizates based on aromatic vinyl compounds
abstract Aromatic vinyl compounds, e.g. styrene, a -methyl styrene, divinyl benzene, vinyl anisole, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl carbazole or mixtures thereof, are copolymerized with acenaphthene or its nuclear substitution products, e.g. 3-methyl, 3,6-dimethyl, 1-ethyl, 5-isobutyl, 4-chloro, 5-chloro, 1,2-dichloro, 5-bromo-acenaphthene or mixtures thereof in the presence of an anhydrous acid-reacting polymerization catalyst, for example aluminium, stannic, zinc, and ferric chlorides, boron trifluoride, titanium tetrachlorides and complexes such as boron trifluorides, acetic and phosphoric acid, and chloracetato, lactato, oleato, and benzatofluoboric acids. The reaction may take place in solution in, for example, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, or mixtures such as toluene and/or xylenes with ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride or cyclohexanone or in an aqueous emulsion containing a catalyst and stabilizer, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium abietate, or a soap. The catalyst is precipitated by the addition of oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of alkaline metals or earth metals and filtered off, the mixture is then distilled to remove the solvents. Drying oils such as linseed oil may be present during the polymerization. The products, which are soluble in organic esters, chloroform, carbontetrachloride and acetone may be used as softening agents or in lacquers, and may be modified by condensation, e.g. with formaldehyde. Specification 680,441 is referred to.
