titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to diolefinmonoolefin resins |
abstract | A resinous copolymer is prepared by copolymerizing 50-70 per cent of a diolefin with 50-30 per cent mono-olefin at between 50 DEG F. and 125 DEG F. and at a pressure at least equal to the total input pressure of the reactants by the addition thereto of an anhydrous Friedel-Crafts catalyst dissolved in an inert solvent. Specified diolefins are butadiene (preferred), isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, piperylene, dimethallyl and allocymene, while diisobutylene (preferred), propylene, n- and iso-butylenes, n- or iso-pentenes, hexenes, heptenes and octenes are isoolefins mentioned. Specified catalysts are aluminium chloride, bromide, chlorobromide, aluminium chloride-aluminium alkoxide double salt, boron trifluoride, titanium chloride, zirconium chloride and the uranium chlorides and inert solvents are ethyl and methyl chlorides, carbon disulphide, ethylenedichloride and chloroform. A diluent-solvent for the copolymer, which may be the same as the catalyst solvent may also be present, and the reaction may be carried out at a pressure of from 30-50 p.s.i.g. The catalyst solution is preferably added over a period and the polymerization continued to from 60 80 per cent conversion when the supply of catalyst is discontinued and the catalyst quenched. |
