titleOfInvention | Process for the modification of styrenized fatty acid polyesters |
abstract | The film properties of styrenized unsaturated fatty oil acid polyesters are improved by combining them with alcoholates of di- or polyvalent metals. The styrenized polyesters used are those obtained by the copolymerization of styrene or homologues thereof or similarly reacting unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as alpha-methyl styrene, chlorostyrene, cyclopentadiene, and dicyclopentadiene, with fatty oils, such as lightly oxidized linseed oil, and synthetic resins formed by the condensation of polycarboxylic acids, polyhydric alcohols and fatty oil acids, p such as a glycerine phthalate resin modified with ricinic acid. Alcoholates specified are those of iron, aluminium, or cobalt, such as aluminium butylate, or their alkoxo salts, such as cobalt aluminium butylate, which may be stabilized with tautomeric substances such as acetoacetic ester, formyl acetophenone, and diethyl malonate. Alternatively there may be used the synthetic resins obtained by reacting the alcoholates of metals of valency of 3 or more with tautomeric substances such as acetoacetic ester or malonic acid esters. In a modification of the process an unsaturated fatty oil acid modified alkyd resin is treated with a metal alcoholate or derivative thereof prior to styrenization. The process results in an improvement in the resistance of films made from the styrenized polyesters to heat, water, solvents and alkalies. |
