titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to plasticized compositions of vinyl resins |
abstract | Polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate containing a maximum of 15 per cent vinyl acetate, is plasticized with a mixture of plasticizers in the proportion of from 15 to 67 per cent by weight of the polymer, the mixture consisting of a conventional plasticizer of high solvency for the polymer and a plasticizer of the formula <FORM:0721424/IV (a)/1> where n is 2 or 3, x is at least one and the sum of n+x is not greater than 4, when n+x is 3, <FORM:0721424/IV (a)/2> is the acyl radical of oleic acid, lauric acid or tall oil and when n+x is 4, <FORM:0721424/IV (a)/3> is the acyl radical of a fatty acid containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms or the mixed acyl radicals of the fatty and resin acids of tall oil, the proportion of the second plasticizer to the polymer being not less than 5 to 100 and not more than 25 to 100 and the second plasticizer constituting not more than 50 per cent of the total plasticizer. Conventional plasticizers mentioned are dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, trioctyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, triethylene glycol dioctoate, dioctyl adipate, and butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate. The other plasticizer may be phenoxyethyl laurate or oleate, tall oil ester of phenoxyethanol, phenoxy ethoxyethyl laurate or palmitate or stearate or oleate or myristate, phenoxy propyl oleate or laurate or stearate, the tall oil ester of phenoxy propanol or commercial mixtures of these esters derived from coconut, corn, or cottonseed oil acids. The plasticized resin may be compounded with pigments, fillers, e.g. calcium silicate and/or carbonate, lubricants, e.g. stearic acid, stabilizers, e.g. basic lead carbonate, and solvents or diluents, e.g. xylene and naphtha. The compositions may be moulded or used for coatings. |
