abstract | A thermosetting moulding composition comprises antimony trioxide and an unsaturated alkyd resin in which at least 20 per cent of the acid groups are D 2-3-enedioyl groups and the acid groups present are attached to chlorinated benzene nuclei, the chlorine content of which is between 6 and 20 per cent of the organic substances in the composition and the antimony trioxide is present in an amount between 1 per cent of the composition and three times the weight of chlorine therein. The acid groups may be present in a component of the alkyd resin, e.g. tetrachlorophthalic anhydride or in an additional monomeric constituent of the composition, e.g. diallyl chloro- and tetra-chlorophthalates, diallyl and dimethallyl chloro-phenylphosphonates and chlorotolylphosphonates. Preferably the alkyd resin is prepared from a mixture of acids of which at least 20 mol. per cent is maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or mesaconic acid and the remainder is a mono-, di-, tri or tetrachloro-substituted o-phthalic acid or anhydride, isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid, and the composition contains also a monomer such as styrene, o-methyl styrene; methyl acrylate or methacrylate; diallyl phthalate, oxalate or diglycollate; triethyl citrate; diallyl diphenyl, dimethallyl phenyl, diallyl and dimethallyl tolyl phosphonates; carbonyl, maleyl, fumaryl, succinyl, adipyl, sebacyl or phthalyl bis-(allyl lactate); fumaryl bis-(allyl glycollate) and carbonyl bis-(allyl salicylate); tetra-(allyl glycollate) or (allyl lactate) silicate. Suitable polyhydric alcohols for the preparation of the alkyd are any in the series ethylene glycol to decamethylene glycol; propylene or butylene glycol; any in the series diethylene glycol to monoethylene glycol; pentandiol-2,4; diprophylene glycol; butandiol-2,3; monoformin or monoacetin; monomethylin or monoethylin; any in the series dihydroxy-butane to dihydroxydecane; alkyl or methallyl ethers of glycerol, pentaglycerol, pentaerythritol, butanetetrol-1,2,3,4 or butanetriol-1,2,3; monomethyl or monoisobutyl ethers of pentaerythritol or butanetetrol-1,2,3,4. Part of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid may be replaced by a saturated dicarboxylic acid such as any in the series oxalic acid to sebacic acid, any benzene, naphthalene or cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid or diglycollic, dilactic or resorcinol diacetic acid. Up to 5 mol. per cent of the dihydric alcohol may be replaced by glycerol or pentaerythritol and a similar proportion of the dicarboxylic acid may be replaced by citric acid. Monobasic acids, monohydric alcohols and natural resin acids may be included in proportions of up to 10 mol. per cent of the acid or alcohol. The composition may include fillers, e.g. a -cellulose, shredded paper, chopped cloth, cotton flock, cord or linters, wood fibre, regenerated cellulose, kaolin, fibrous silicates glass fibres and ground glass and may be impregnated and coated with formaldehyde-heterocyclic polyamine resins, derived from, e.g., guanazoles, pyrimidines, triazines and guanamines; a base of a Group II non-amphoteric metal, e.g. the oxides, hydroxides, borates, carbonates and alcoholates of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium; catalysts, e.g. acetyl, chloracetyl, acetyl benzoyl, succinyl, toluyl, anisoyl, p-brombenzoyl, furoyl peroxides, t-butyl perbenzoate, di-t-butyl perbenzoate, peracetic or perbenzoic acid, diisopropylene or diisobutylene ozonide; mould lubricants, e.g. zinc stearate, plasticizers and colouring matter. Examples describe the use of alkyd resins derived from ethylene and propylene glycols, maleic anhydride and dichloro- or tetrachloro-phthalic anhydride, together with diallyl phthalate or diallyl phenyl phosphonate. |
