A photographic developing solution comprises an alkaline solution of a silver halide developing agent (e.g. p-phenylenediamine, diethyl - p - phenylenediamine, 2 - amino -5 - diethylaminotoluene, hydroquinone, or N - methyl - p - aminophenol), an alkali metal sulphite (e.g. sodium or potassium sulphite or potassium bisulphite), and an 8 - hydroxy - quinoline - 5 - sulphonic acid (e.g. 8 - hydroxy - quinoline - 5 - sulphonic acid itself) or its 7 - chloro-, 7 - bromo -, or 6 - methyl - deriva - ' tives). The alkali may be sodium carbonate, hydroxide, or metaborate, and the developer may contain a primary aliphatic amine such as ethylenediamine, guanidine, or ethanolamine, or morpholine. The use of triglycin is referred to. The 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid may be incorporated in the emulsion or in an overcoating, intermediate, or backing layer.
