titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to cyanine dyes |
abstract | Cyanine dyes of the general formula: <FORM:0717858/IV(c)/1> are prepared by heating a dye of the formula: <FORM:0717858/IV(c)/2> with a compound of the formula R4COCH2COR5 in the presence of triethylamine. In the above formula, R1 and R3 represent alkyl groups, R2 represents an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, R1 and R5 represent alkyl or aryl groups but R5 may also be alkoxy or amino, X is an anion, D1 is a benzthiazole residue and D2 is a residue of benz- or naphthathiazole, benzselenazole or benzoxazole. Particularly useful compounds are those wherein D1 and D2 complete benzthiazole nuclei, R1 and R3 are alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R4 is methyl or ethyl and R5 is methyl, ethyl, or methoxy. The heterocyclic nuclei may contain alkyl, aryl, amino, hydroxy, alkoxy, methylene dioxide or halogen substituents in the carbocyclic rings. In the examples, R1, R3 and R4 are methyl or ethyl or R4 is phenyl, while R5 is methyl, ethyl, ethoxy, methoxy, phenyl, or anilido. According to the Provisional Specification the dyes may have the formula: <FORM:0717858/IV(c)/3> wherein R1, R3, R4 and R5 are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or R4 and R5 may also be alkoxy or amino, x, m and n are O or I, X is an anion, and D1 and D2 each completes a heterocyclic nucleus, and a list of such nuclei is given. |
