titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to filters for tobacco smoke |
abstract | 717,029. Tobacco smoke filters. SCHREUS, H. T., and SCHONHOFER, F. Dec. 22, 1952 [Dec. 24, 1951], No. 32488/52. Class 130 Acid and basic volatile harmful tobacco smoke elements are retained or combined with by a filtering medium comprising as first and second constituents a cation exchange material, such as sulphonated carbon of 1 to 2 m.m. grain size, and a granular activated carbon impregnated with an organic base containing a suitable amino group, especiolly an aliphatic 1.2-aminoalcohol. The medium may also contain, as by absorption, substances, such as hydrazine, hydroxylamine, semicarbazide, thiosemicarbazide, substitution products thereof, or sodium bisulphite, which react with carbonyl compounds in the smoke. The medium may be charged directly, or enclosed in a cartridge, into a chamber in a pipe mouthpiece or cigar or cigarette holder or may be placed in a cartridge 6 having ends 7, 8 shaped to engage a holder and a cigar or cigarette respectively. Several such cartridges 6 may be used in series. The constituents of the filtering medium may be mixed within the cartridge, or arranged in series therein .and separated by porous partitions. The cartridge ends are closed by perforated diaphragms, that on the downstream side having optionally a brown ink or dye indicator mark which ceases to show as the diaphragm becomes discoloured on filter contamination. Activated carbon of 2m.m. grain size which contains absorbed aminoethanol, diethylaminoethanol, piperidine or diethanolamine may be used as the second constituent, and methods of preparing such carbon are given. |
