titleOfInvention | Improved process for producing cellular thermo-plastic bodies |
abstract | Sheets, foils, webs and like materials are made from closed cell cellular thermoplastic substances which have a lower specific gravity than the sheet &c. to be produced, by cutting the cellular material into sheets &c. of greater thickness than finally desired and then heating so as to contract the sheet &c. as the gases escape therefrom by diffusion and so increase the specific gravity thereof. The gas diffusion may be effected at reduced pressure, e.g. in a vacuum. Specified thermoplastics are polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidine chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinylacetate, butyrate and alcohol, polyvinyl formal and butyral, polystyrene, polydichlor-styrene, polyalphamethyl styrene, polymethyl acrylate, polyethyl acrylate and polymethyl methacrylate. Plasticizers such as dioctyl, dibutyl and dimethyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate may be present. Specified blowing agents are aziosobutyric dinitrile, alpha, - alpha1 - azobisisobutyronitrile diazoaminobenzene, 1-3 bis (p-xenyl) triazene, ammonium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and oleic acid, and mixtures of sodium nitrate with ammonium chloride. Hydrogen may also be present in the closed cells. The p products may be used for shoe soles Specification 706,721 is referred to. |
